Magnetic Equipment Guide -- Eddy Current Separators
Eddy current separators remove nonferrous metals such as aluminum, die-cast metal, and copper from nonmetallic material. Material is fed onto the conveyor belt of the separator, which moves it across the magnetic rotor where separation occurs. The two streams of material discharge into a housing which has a splitter to divide the nonferrous metal from nonmetallic material such as paper, plastic, wood, or auto shredder residue (ASR) – also called shredder fluff. The key component is the magnetic rotor, which is a series of permanent rare earth magnets mounted on a support plate attached to a shaft. The magnetic rotor is surrounded by (but not attached to) a nonmetallic shell which supports the conveyor belt. This allows the rotor to spin independently and at a much higher speed than the nonmetallic shell and belt.Read more -
An eddy current separator (ECS) is a machine that uses a powerful magnetic field to separate non-ferrous metals from an input waste or ore stream. The device makes use of eddy currents to effect the separation. Non-ferrous metals typically separated by an ECS include aluminum, copper and die-cast metals.[1]In waste sorting of single-stream recycling at materials recovery facilities, ECS is used after the waste has passed through some arrangement of magnets to remove ferrous metals. Eddy current separators are typically used at the end of the waste material stream, since ferrous metals will become heated when exposed to an eddy current field, leading to potential damage to the eddy current separator.Read more

How does Eddy Current Separator Work?
The design of the Eddy Current Separator permanently changed the landscape of metal recycling by making it much easier and more efficient to separate and recover highly valuable non-ferrous metals like copper and aluminum. The first Eddy Current Separator was developed by the Bird Group, a UK-based metal recycler, in 1981. The development of the Eddy Current Separator was so significant that it resulted in the Bird Group being presented with the Prince of Wales’ Award for Technology and Innovation and the Tomorrow’s World Award for Technological Development and Innovation. In the years that followed its initial invention, Eddy Current Separator technology has continued to grow and evolve.Read more -
When a piece of nonferrous metal, such as aluminum, passes over the separator, the magnets inside the shell rotate past the aluminum at high speed. This forms eddy currents in the aluminum, which in turn create a magnetic field around the piece of aluminum. The polarity of that magnetic field is the same as the rotating magnet, causing the aluminum to be repelled away from the magnet. This repulsion makes the trajectory of the aluminum greater than that of the nonmetallics, allowing the two material streams to be separated.Read more

The Eddy Current Separator (ECS) is an advanced metal sorting unit that is capable of separating non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper, brass, alloy from dry recyclables. JONO eddy current separator can produce higher purity and increased yield of better separation of aluminum cans from PET plastic beverage containers.Nowadays it became the most economical beverage bottle sorting and recycling equipment. The principle of eddy current separator is to separate conductor from non-conductor by using the transformed magnetic field of conductor to produce force.Read more

Eddy Current Separator: Advanced Non-Ferrous Metal Recovery
An eddy current separator is a device that uses a powerful magnetic field to separate non-ferrous metals, such as aluminum and copper, from other materials. This technology is widely used in recycling facilities to improve the recovery rates of valuable metals and enhance the quality of recycled materials.Eddy Current Separator rotor spins at high speeds, an electric current is induced into conducting metals. The induced electric current produces a magnetic field, which opposes the field created by the rotor, repelling the conducting metals over a pre-positioned splitter plate. The remaining materials such as plastics, glass and other dry recyclables will simply free-fall over the rotor, sepa-rating them from the repelled metals.Read more -
